The cyber world can sometimes be a very dangerous place to live; from personal identity fraud to state sponsored government attacks, the threat through America’s online networks to our security, safety and economy is more real than ever before. These intrusions are occurring on some level into our corporate networks, personal computers, and government systems every single day, posing a potential serious threat to the stability of our day-to-day lives.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is tasked with combating this ongoing cyber assault, and eliminating cyber threats is its number three national priority, after only counterterrorism and counterintelligence. The agency’s Cyber Division, created in 2002, works to combat cyber-based terrorism, hostile foreign intelligence operations conducted over the Internet, and cyber-crime by applying the highest level of technical capability and investigative expertise by employing a group of technically trained agents, analysts, and forensic specialists.

We are pleased to bring FBI Special Agent Patrick Geahan to give a firsthand account of the FBI’s role in thwarting cyber threats facing the country, and will present an overview of the FBI’s Cyber program. SA Geahan will provide a breakdown of the major cyber threats, including the objective of the attackers, the typical attack methodology employed, and some of the resulting impacts.  The threats he will address will include foreign governments, ideologically-motivated attackers, traditional cyber criminals, and mitigation and preparedness recommendations.

This program is being presented as a joint program between C2ST, the Chicago Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and Loyola University Computer Science Department.
