Led by TECA president Melissa Sornik, LCSW, and co-facilitated by TECA executive director Maratea Cantarella, this monthly group offers parents the chance to learn and share strategies for parents their uniquely gifted 2e kids.

Some support group session topics are based on readings from SENG’s A Parent’s Guide To Gifted Children. Participants may want to read the relevant chapters, though it is not require for participation.

March’s Topic:  Understanding Motivation in the 2e Child/Teen

Why is it that sometimes our kids can be totally driven about a project or topic to the point they become little experts, but at other times they lack focus and have no interest in tackling other tasks or responsibilities? This perplexing issue is common to all children and adolescents, but particularly so to twice exceptional children, who are often highly resistant to engaging in work that isn’t meaningful to them. In this month’s sessions, we will discuss the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, examine how 2e kids can struggle with perfectionism and learned helplessness and explore other roadblocks to motivation.
