Family Workshop: Not Pi (ages 5-12)

  • July 23, 2015
  • 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
  • Oriental Institute, University of Chicago
While they may not have known the value of π (pi), we owe quite a bit of our math and numbering systems to the mathematicians of the ancient Middle East. The 360 degrees of a circle, our calendar system, and the 24-hour day are just a few systems that we inherited from the ancient Middle Eastern understanding of circles and cycles. What is more, the workarounds they used to build almost-circular buildings without knowing π contributed to the Greeks finally getting the first 5 digits of π in the 2nd century AD.

Help us to rediscover and explore π through this hands-on workshop. Kids ages 5–12 interact with the power of π at a variety of levels in order to better understand the properties of a circle, the history of trying to work without π, angles, and how all of it relates to our clocks and calendars.

Registration required.

1 child + 1 adult: $10 for members/$20 for nonmembers; Additional registrants: $5/$10
