Learn how crisp, precise folds can transform two dimensions into three! We will start with simple single sheet creations and move on to more complex designs and modular origami. To keep things interesting we will fold with a variety of sizes and types of paper. Origami is a very satisfying way to increase spatial reasoning while nurturing your creative side. Folding requires some dexterity and patience so the atmosphere in this class will be quiet and focused.

Teachers: Felix Mueller, Michelle Keim-Mueller

Minimum/maximum number of students: 4/12

Age range: all ages

Price: $15.50

Supplies required:

Supplies: We will provide some specialty paper for folding but recommend you begin class with a beefy stack of your own square origami paper. Paper can be ordered from Amazon or purchased at the Japanese book store at Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights. Dick Blick also carries origami paper and the Paper Source has a very limited supply. We recommend double-sided paper, but anything square will be fine. Roughly six inches is a good size to start with. For transporting your creations we recommend that you recycle a clear plastic clam shell container, the kind that you get at the supermarket with fresh greens inside. Optional: bone folder for extra crisp folds and for thick folding.

This class will be taught by Felix Mueller, age 12, with his mom, Michelle Keim-Mueller present as a less skilled but enthusiastic folder. Felix has been folding for about 6 years under the guidance of his older sister who has been an origami nut for 11 years. (We hope to have her as a special guest for one of our meetings.) The 3 of us are regulars at the North Side origami meet up where we’ve learned many wonderful and creative paper folding tactics. Felix’s favorite paper creations include the spooky hand, modular spiky balls, magic balls, hydrangea tessalations and he recently learned how to fold a clever origami pumpkin.
